Bridges for Africa

The Norddeutsche Mission (NM) is an international ecclesiastical community organization that includes four German Protestant churches, the Evangelical Church of Bremen, the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Oldenburg, the Evangelical Reformed Church in Germany and the Church of Lippe, as well as two West African Presbyterian churches, the Evangelical Presbyterian Church Ghana and the Eglise Evangélique Presbytérienne du Togo (EEPT). Spirituality and finances – scarcity and abundance – are shared in ecumenical solidarity. Gender and diversity guidelines promote equal communion.

The NM was founded in Hamburg in 1836 and began its missionary work in West Africa in 1847 – in pre-German colonial times – in the area of present-day Ghana and Togo. The proclamation of the Gospel was directed primarily to the Ewe ethnic group.

What mission is for the NM in changing times was articulated by the EEPT in 1964: Mission is “the whole gospel for the whole person.”
Therefore, sustainable social work, education, agricultural consultation, medical aid, promotion of women, and village development and advocacy are the fields of action in mission, next to which are evangelization initiatives and the commitment to church education.
The Eglise Evangélique Presbytérienne du Togo is very dedicated to the task of promoting the development of young congregations and churches in its neighboring countries. Close contacts exist with Christians in the Sahel state of Niger.

The NM supports the sustainable development programs of the churches in Togo and Ghana and works together with them for church and vocational training.

Finally, the NM facilitates intercultural learning in cooperation with VEM in the Global South and North through participation in the volunteer program “weltwärts” (North-South and South-North), through women’s consultations, youth encounters, international choir projects, the exchange program “Sichtwechsel” and at theological consultations.

Since August 2019, the NM has been a member of the “Ökumenisches Netzwerk Klimagerechtigkeit”, having already campaigned in previous years – especially in Ghana – for the establishment of Eco-Clubs. The “Good Life for All” should become a reality. For this reason, the NM in Bremen also joined the “Aktionsbündnis Wachstumswende” in 2018.

In Togo, the NM, together with other actors – including Bread for the World – is committed to defending human rights. This is a task that it has been carrying out for years because of the prevailing political conditions in Togo.
The “Projet pour un Accompagnement Oecumenique du Togo” promotes democracy education and peace work.
